BALTIMORE — Gerrit Cole made it by means of 5 innings in his first outing since leaving with a good left hamstring in his earlier begin and was pretty happy with the leads to a 7-2 win over the Orioles at Camden Yards on Tuesday evening.
“It responded well,’’ Cole said of his hamstring. “Part of the job as a starting pitcher is to be able to grind.”
Cole pitched with a wrap on his left leg, which he stated made it “tough to move around,” particularly when masking first base. He plans to change it earlier than his subsequent outing.
Still, he restricted Baltimore to 1 run in 5 innings, though he wanted 108 pitches, with three walks and 7 strikeouts.
“I’d have preferred to pitch somewhat deeper,’’ Cole stated.
